Many hotel managers do not listen to this advice, but in the end they will somehow have problem with their business. It is a lucrative business, yet risky. And as a hotel guest, do make your own homework before booking any hotels.

I booked one of the cheap hotels around Port Dickson online, with hope that I would have a comfortable stay for one night and get into a swimming pool. Lucky for me, through a last minute booking I managed to get Cozzi Hotel, which was just a few minutes drive from Teluk Kemang exit. But one thing I forgot to check was the hotel reviews from various online sites. From what I read, it had a favourable review.

It had

very big slides and considerably big swimming pool. However, it was not open all the time. It only opened at 9.30 am. The funny thing was the opening hour notice was only typed on a piece of A4 paper and pasted on the sliding door. When the sliding door was opened, nobody could see the notice.

We didn't see the notice at all. Since we only stayed for one night, we decided to go for a swim early in the morning. So we went into the pool around 8. We were the only people in there. Suddenly, we were scolded by the staff. We were told about the time, but we did not see any sign. The staff said she wanted to 'investigate' regarding this matter.

When we went back to the hotel room, we could see a lot of families splashing water in the pool. It was not even 9 yet. Some even wearing t-shirts So my father went down a talked to the staff about this. The staff gave a different excuse and did not do anything to chase away the people in the pool.

When we wanted to check out, we had to wait for a long time as the staff wanted to 'investigate' our room to see if we were already out. However, when a young couple next to us went to the counter, they had their rooms checked out in a flash.

Talk about being double standard here.

When I logged into my brother's Fourspace, an IPhone app for travellers, I realised that there were so many bad reviews targeting the staff and service in the hotel.

All in all the room is relatively okay, the slides are okay, near the beach, but the staff... please nevermind the staff. If you don't mind having a bad service, it is a very good place to stay. 2 out of 5?

I hope this review helps to the families who are planning to stay in Teluk Kemang.

One morning in Teluk Kemang

Just came back from Teluk Kemang, Port Dickson. Following the victory of Negeri Sembilan against Terengganu last night, I decided to have a walk along the beach with my family in the morning. The place was quite peaceful and quiet compared to other parts of Port Dickson. It may have been for 2 reasons: It is not the peak season, and people were off to Bukit Jalil to watch yesterday's match. But it didn't really matter, as the place was just as nice as other beaches in the west coast of Malaysia.

We treated ourselves with some nice nasi lemaks. The people here in the warung were friendly. And the uncle kept giggling while taking orders. Such friendly gestures may have been the energy that attracts visitors from different walks of life to dine here. Too bad it is closed during night time. We had to walk further down to the complex to find a good place to eat.

We could see some fishing boats, jet sju and banana boats around here. There are many sporting events can be done here. It wasn't as quiet as few years back. Hotels, resorts and villas could be seen everywhere. A good place to hang out for young people.

One thing that we couldn't find around here was coconut. The warungs did not serve coconuts despite having coconut trees along the beach. It would have been a great tourist attraction, especially for the locals.

Keropok Lekor for dummies

What is a keropok? Masjid Sultan Salahudin Abdul Aziz Shah has been Shah Alam's landmark for years.

I went down to a landscape exhibition in one of the parks here. A theme park is located on the hill almost similar to Disneyland, and there is also a large arcade city inside the building.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8puh8TeH0ZM/Ta7lfmhuvFI/AAAAAAAAAKY/VZHZuTTNMTY/s320/P4180131.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597663717948832850" />

Situated at the border between Selangor and Pahang, Genting Highlands is about 30 minutes drive from Kuala Lumpur. However, visitors should take note when taking buses as they are prone to accidents when ascending the hill.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0ZfxACaVnDI/Ta7ltTE5lOI/AAAAAAAAAKg/ocGFWeiVVeQ/s320/P4180140.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597663953245803746" />

Pangkor: Let's find some fish!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tfMyurA-1n8/Ta2n8-Zmk4I/AAAAAAAAAJo/ln7i9BIWEPs/s320/P4130111.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597314577875768194" />

Went to Pangkor last week and it was a blast. I took a ferry from Marina Bay instead of Lumut, the usual place. It has new facilities going up around there. There were so many things to do in the island in so little time! I was not really coming for a holiday, but hey, when you travel you have to bear in mind that you are a traveller and you must act like one! Here are some of the things that you can do upon your arrival to Pangkor:

Snorkeling and Banana Boat
Have a good time snorkeling with your friends. You can also rent a Banana Boat to enjoy the waves.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 231px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BPBT4YIWclg/Ta2nDwz0ukI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/3UOgGSk4XoQ/s320/sani.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597313594975107650" />

Kayaking
Feel like going across the ocean? Go for some kayaking around the island and you'll be able to see some small islands surrounding Pangkor.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aUAG78paTok/Ta2n1J9QLzI/AAAAAAAAAJg/Qg9b4h0pLRs/s320/P4140119.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597314443539132210" />

Cycle and Motorbike
For as low as RM2 per hour(approx. 40p/less than a buck), you can rent a bike and cycle across the island. But make sure that the brakes and the gears are okay! Since it is cheap, you are prone to have bikes that malfunction. As for motorbike, you can rent one at about RM25 per hour (roughly 5pounds/more than 10 bucks).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 250px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C349RdU2jb0/Ta2njqVewwI/AAAAAAAAAJY/rWKi10CYeQg/s320/bike.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597314142993040130" />

Taxi!
If you don't feel like exercising, you can just get a pink taxi across the island at about RM10. There are a few interesting spots that you can visit, such as the Chinese temple, the Dutch port, and the town center itself where you'll find some interesting seafood.

Lookout for the blue-eyed anchovies!
I am not sure if they are really that blue-eyed, but be sure to look for some! The price is a bit expensive compared to the typical ones (probably because of the contact lens), but some people said they are simply delicious when cooked.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 209px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j4dl7AGOvhg/Ta2oMetLw2I/AAAAAAAAAJw/xybVwavyy8Q/s320/octo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597314844245869410" />

We also found a friend of Paul along the way!

Nasi Ambang of Riverstone

What is one of the most popular cuisine of the Javanese? That would be Nasi Ambang. But you don't have to go all the way to the island just to get one of them. Malaysia, especially some of the Selangorians are very much familiar with the food. However, it is quite a trick to find a stall that sells one. Historically, the Javanese has set foot in Selangor long before independence. Thus, they introduced the food as a traditional staple among their community.

One of the good places that I would like to recommend here is in Riverstone. Located in Sg Tua Forest, it gives the kind of tranquility that visitors are looking for. It is also a few minutes drive from Kuala Lumpur.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eu-s6S5YVmk/TasBjsmNnnI/AAAAAAAAAI4/AZgRYXOfln4/s320/P4110127.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5596568674716458610" />

In order to eat the food, you need to have everyone to sit together so that each person will take turns to munch the rice and the chicken!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VAd6xRMaHYI/TasCDabkqWI/AAAAAAAAAJA/I1RAVp-hzOo/s320/P4110135.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5596569219595807074" />

At just RM50 per meal, you can also order the Nasi Ambang to be sent to your doorstep, depending on where you live.

Riverstone offers accommodation for people who want to stay in an eco-friendly resort. It also provides space for courses, workshops and teambuilding. You can also have your wedding here!

For more information, you can go to their website here. Welcome to the town where unity is prevalent, where heritage is preserved, and culture maintained. Kuala Kubu Bharu will always fascinate people who wish to experience the real Malaysian 'diversity'.

I have always been excited to come to this part of the state for a sense of tranquility while observing a friendly atmosphere of people from different races. Shortly after, we received an email response:

--------------------------------------------------
Thank you for the quick response to the problem. We have rules to adhere
to and it was unfortunate that the guest wanted to ignore the rules. True,
in the booking requst an extra mattress was requsted but the hotel never
respond to the request simply because the room is designed to receive 4
person only. The guest has 5 adults + 1 child ( 13 yrs old ? ). I am sorry
that the guest said I was rude but how could I not be when I was shouted
at with some "rough words"
-----------------------------------------------

This was the booking confirmation we received prior to our arrival to the resort:

We assumed that when they said "all children under 11 stay free of charge when using existing bedding, it meant that one child can stay in the room for 4. The funny thing is, the owner thought that the child we referred to was 13 years old, when she was obviously there in the reception, not even looked like a 13 year old girl. Furthermore, it is really irresponsible for the hotel owner as he did not respond to the request as if everyone can understand the policy stated/seen the room. Customers can be mistaken for facts, but he should have at least say, "dear guest, the room can only accomodate 4 persons" and we can follow suit.

And lastly, "i was rude" when "i was shouted at"? That is a really irresponsible remark. We only shouted harsh words after he responded to us with the loud annoying voice (in short, he shouted at us first). How can anyone not become furious over that?

Please sir, change your attitude.

Cherating Bayview: A no-no

I am currently in Cherating with my family, after months of staying at home. We are visiting this place for 3 days. This time around, everyone in the family is available. So, we were thinking of having a relaxing time, without swaying away to workloads that are abundant at home. Everyone was excited with the break. It was not until we got to our first resort.

We booked Cherating Bayview through the internet, as we thought that the price was good, and we were able to get extra beds since that we are six in the family. Booked one room for 4, get 1 extra bed for an adult and one kid was free of charge to stay - we thought that was our deal. Sent through a comment on that after we booked.

Suddenly, we encountered a problem when we got to the resort. The resort itself was rather creepy and uninviting, as we could not see anyone around and the gate was closed. We thought that it would probably because it was still Friday, and people might only come on weekends to celebrate Christmas. We went to the reception and saw an old man sitting around watching us. When we pressed the bell, the man shouted at the receptionist to come out from the office.

We informed the receptionist regarding our request but the receptionist hesitated and made a sly face. She told us that we were not allowed to get an extra bed, but instead we had to get another room. We justified our position by saying that we were allowed to get an extra bed because it was stated on the internet. But the receptionist ignored our request.

Surprisingly, the old man made a loud voice and ask us if we booked through Booking.com. We told him that we did that and we were supposed to be allowed to get an extra bed. We did not get the chance to finish our words and he suddenly said that we were not allowed to get an extra bed and had to get another room.

My mom said, "But we are not staying here for one day."

The old man, with an annoying loud voice replied, "No, you still need to get another room."

My mom then requested, "Fine,if let say we get another room for today, how can you be sure that we can get another room tomorrow?"

The old man went silent for a while. Then he continued about telling us to get another room if we wanted to stay.

My big brother who made the booking said that we could just leave and go to a different place.

And the old man sarcastically said, "Yeah, just go. I don't mind." We did not expect him to say anything. Everyone was furious and we went off to a different hotel.

But as soon as we arrived in Cherating Bay (a different hotel), it took us only a minute to get a room without booking. And it had a friendly atmosphere, and the staff was helpful.

The thing is, we don't really mind about not getting the extra beds. But please treat your customer accordingly. Don't shout at them. Don't make faces. I am disappointed with the old man who seems to be the owner of the resort. Tell us politely that we can get another room. I thought he must be thinking that since we are locals, we are cheapskate. Such mentality can only hinder you from getting more visitors. It is an educational site where it shows bits and pieces of information on how Kingdoms of Kedah were like prior to the arrival of Islam. This is where you get to see the fusion of Hindu and Buddhist art, and the strategically importance of the valley as a maritime trading port. We went there for a few hours before paying a visit to my brother’s friend’s house.

<sup>

The Candi is still visible and preserved

</sup>

<sup>

The stream was probably the place where the people established their trading port

</sup>

Then we went to Alor Setar, and took a picture under the Alor Setar Tower.

<sup>

The Alor Setar Tower at night

</sup>

And finally the next day we headed back to Kuala Lumpur. A small state bordering Kedah, it was one of the busiest states aside from Kuala Lumpur. Well known for its bridge, it is also a melting pot for different cultures and backgrounds. One thing that makes it different from the cosmopolitan Kuala Lumpur is that despite its busy streets, it is also known for its classical British buildings which were erected by the colonialists.

<sup>

The harbour
</sup>

<sup>

The mainland
Seen from the ferry
</sup>

The beach here is now. However, you have to be careful not to go too deep into the sea. The Straits of Malacca is also known for its deadly jellyfish! Yet, it could be quite tricky once you run into a paddy field. I took us half an hour to get in and out of my uncle’s house. You can hardly find highways here. But once you become familiar with the roads, every area in Perlis is just at your fingertips. Well, at least that was what my uncle told me. One of the attractions here is the Padang Besar, at the borders of Malaysia-Thailand. This is the place where you can find cheap stuff including apparels and toys. We went there and shopped just about anything. I even managed to get my trousers from RM40 to RM20. But as for the quality of the items bought, I couldn’t say anything about it. Make sure that you check your items before you even start bargaining.

After hanging around in my uncle’s house and Padang Besar, we headed down to Kedah. We came across a vast sugarcane field on our way there.

The vast sugarcane field

We've made it!
Look at the size of the field

Northern States: Overview

Our next campaign was to visit the northern states of Malaysia, consisting of 3 states bordering Thailand - Kedah, rich for its paddy fields; Penang, a cosmopolitan island which was once part of Kedah Sultanate and Perlis, the highest end of Malaysia. Bukit Kayu Hitam would be the last exit for the North South Highway (PLUS), the most frequently used road in the Peninsular. Penang is also famous for having one of the longest bridges in Asia. The states, excluding Penang were part of the Unfederated Malay States prior to the independence. One of the most beautiful and modernized places here; that you won’t even realized that you are actually in Malaysia. Some even claimed that it is among the early intelligent cities in the world. It is also famous for its wetland concepts, making it environment-friendly as well. One of the few beautiful buildings that you can see here is the Palace of Justice, something that looks like Taj Mahal, only smaller. And a few other conceptual buildings like the Perbadanan Government Complex and the Putra Mosque.

<sup>

My brother in front of the Putra Mosque

</sup>

The Putra Mosque has its own unique feature as well. A bazaar is located just below it, residing next to the lake. And you should visit Putrajaya’s botanical gardens as well, where they have different types of floras and beautiful monuments. You can also cycle there.

<sup>

Putrajaya at night

</sup>

The place is much quieter at night. This would be the best time for you to enjoy the vivid scenery along the bridges. You don’t have to go to the zoo (because as far as I’m concerned there is none!). You can pay a visit to P. D. Ostrich in Port Dickson. If you’re from Kuala Lumpur, it would take just about an hour to reach there. But need I to remind you that the place is kind of hot in the afternoon.

One of the few things that you can do is that you can feed the ostrich. Even better, like I said, you can even ride on it! And the best thing about riding the ostrich is that you’ll get a ‘crazy’ certificate from the trainers, which is something that you show to your friends and relatives. And if you are lucky, you’ll be entertained by a monkey who can pluck the coconut straight from the coconut tree.

After bathing under the sun for quite some time you may want to settle down at the beach. Its tolerance towards people from different ethnicity is much more obvious than those from the Peninsular Malaysia. It is also famous for its Mount Kinabalu, which is known as the highest mountain in Southeast Asia. Sabah owns much of the National Forests in Malaysia such as Crocker Range Parks and Pulau Tiga Park.

My journey with my family includes exploring the city of Kota Kinabalu and the area surrounding the mountain. We only had a full week to get to know this area while appreciating the beauty it possesses. Two sets of camera and video cam were prepared for this fateful event. I even had to skip classes for this trip. I was fortunate to have my friends and lecturer to back me up. Thanks guys.

Hello World!

Welcome guest! MFN Travelogue is now officially available for viewing. Hope you'll enjoy reading this blog. I'm opening this blog to share my stories of my travels everywhere.

I would like to dedicate this to my family, my mom, my dad, my brothers, Phat and Fateh, and my little sister, for supporting and financing trips to almost everywhere. Without them I wouldn’t have gone so far as to New Zealand and United Kingdom. They have also given me the chance to visit various places unknown to me, so as to please me. And I would like to extend my thanks to my friends as well, especially my college friends (IPBArians), for organizing trips in different parts of Kuala Lumpur. As a person who was born in Kuala Lumpur myself, I had never been to the places that you guys have brought me. And last but not least, to all the readers who is and will be reading this blog.

This first part of the blog will cover stories from various parts of Malaysia. For those who have no idea where Malaysia is, it is located in the South East Asia, with its neighbor Singapore on its south and Thailand on its north. Blessed with people of different races and identity, it is still developing its own unique identity. People may think that we can't live harmoniously together, but they should come to our country just to prove themselves wrong.
